Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was sentenced to five years in prison with credit for time already served. The sentencing took place on Monday, March 24, 2025, in California, following Velasquez’s plea of no contest regarding charges of attempted murder, assault, and weapons violations. This resolution stemmed from a violent incident back on February 28, 2022.
The original incident involved Velasquez pursuing and shooting at a man accused of molesting his son. During an intense, 11-mile high-speed chase in San Jose, California, Velasquez opened fire at the suspect's vehicle, striking instead the suspect's stepfather.
Initially, Velasquez faced the possibility of life imprisonment. However, after multiple court delays and negotiations with prosecutors, his legal team secured a plea agreement, reducing the charges and sentencing significantly, as first reported by NBC Bay Area.
Speaking recently to Kyle Kingsbury in an interview, Velasquez openly expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating: "I know what I did, and I know it was very dangerous—not just for everyone involved, but also for innocent bystanders. I understand fully, and I'm ready and willing to take responsibility and repay the community." Velasquez further emphasized his acceptance, vowing to move forward "with my head held up high and without playing the blame game."
Cain Velasquez retired from professional mixed martial arts competition in 2022, holding a record of 14 wins and 3 losses. Widely recognized as one of the most dominant heavyweight champions in UFC history, Velasquez claimed the title twice during his career. His notable victories included wins over renowned fighters and Hall of Famers Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
This sentencing marks the conclusion to a dramatic, emotionally-charged legal battle that has impacted one of mixed martial arts' most storied champions, as well as highlighting significant issues regarding personal justice and public safety.
